There is adequate evidence that points to the fact that |
work related stress can cause heart diseases. In a study |
it has been seen that people employed in high demand |
positions and with less control are prone to suffering |
from a high degree of stress. In addition, if the |
individual's capability and skills are not at par with |
the requirements of the position that he/she is in, then |
it will obviously cause stress. Work stress might also |
occur as a result of shift duties or if the work |
environment is too demanding. The lack of |
acknowledgement or recognition of an individual |
employee's work for a prolonged period of time can also |
cause a feeling of dissent and dissatisfaction. The |
feeling of unfairness can cause stress amongst |
individuals. Work related stress has emerged as one the |
biggest occupational health hazards in the European |
Union after back pain. As much as 28% of the people in |
the Union said that they were greatly affected by stress |
and it has been estimated that as much as €20 billion |
per annum expenses were incurred in covering for the |
lost time and health costs. Though the phenomenon is |
common to all, irrespective of gender differences, women |
were reported to suffer from extremely high levels of |
stress. While 16% of males in the EU suffered from |
cardiovascular conditions owing to stress, the numbers |
rose dramatically in case of women with 22% of the |
females suffering from the same. |
Employees are often given a lot of advice to keep their |
stress levels at a bare minimum. Some of the key aspects |
that do help in the long run include: |
1.Try and avoid smoking when you are stressed out and if |
possible quit the habit |
2.Consume a balanced diet that comprises variety of |
foods |
3. Lower the levels of alcohol and caffeine consumption |
4.Work on one thing at a time, if possible |
5.Try and get adequate hours of sleep in order to be |
fresh and charged up for the day ahead |
6.Work off stress- physical exercise and activity helps |
to generate endorphins, which help to make you feel |
good. Therefore, try to indulge in some physical |
exercise for at least 30 minutes a day on a regular |
basis. |
7. Manage your time better |
8. Also try to get help from your colleagues and the |
support of your family |
9. Try and relax by going out for a walk, drive or just |
listen to music |
10.Indulge yourself occasionally |
11. Take up a hobby |
Though you will never be able to evade workplace stress, |
you can certainly do something to manage it better. |
