Hand position on a keyboard

As it was mentioned before, there are small bumps placed on two of the keys: F and J, located in the so called home row. As you may remember, it is thanks to them, that you can check if your fingers are positioned correctly without looking at the keyboard. F and J keys is where you should put your index fingers. The other fingers should be positioned on keys: A, S, D (left hand) and K, L, ; (right hand). From the very start you should try to develop the habit of positioning your fingers back in the home row after stroking any other key. It is a crucial thing to remember, if you want to learn to touch type.
Now let’s look at the correct finger placement:

Left hand (from pinky to thumb)

  • 3 W S X
  • 4 E D C
  • 5 6 R T F G V B
  • Alt Space

Right hand (from thumb to pinky)

  • Space Alt
